Working hard and looking forward to Christimas!!

December 23, 2013

this week has been pretty good.  it went by pretty slow because we are so excited for this week. we have a huge party with all of the mission tomorrow (on Christmas Eve) and then Wednesday (on Christmas) we get to talk to you guys! it will be sweet!  we had another week full of work which was awesome! elder quille and I taught 36 lessons again, and have a baptismal date for the 4th of January.  his name is Jesus Iquiapasa and he is awesome he is a brother of member.  he really is so sweet.  its been kind of hard this week because I have been thinking a lot about Vicente who hasn't gone to church in three weeks.  we are trying to work with him, it just kills me inside and i don't know what to do.  it's all good though, the spirit will guide us and show us what to do!  I studied some cool stuff this week, first in Matthew 7:24-27 which is the parable of the wise man and the foolish man and thought how we really need to build our testimonies on Christ who can be our firm foundation like it says in Helaman  5:12.  also another cool parable I found is in Doctrine and Covenants 101:43-62 and it talks about how we need to prepare now and shouldn't put anything off!  don't know if you guys like getting these, but I just thought it was cool hahah  I'm doing good on everything just wish I could have maybe a couple more ties and a ped egg for my calluses hahah other than that all is well!

Armadillo soup and SURE!!!

December 16, 2013

This week has been a good one.  Not much went on, just a lot of work. We had 36 lessons this week, our best week yet! It’s getting harder and harder to distinguish in between the weeks out here so sorry if this one is a little short.  One cool thing we did is we ate some very interesting things.  The bishops wife is from the jungle and they eat everything that moves out there hahah.  On Saturday night we ate sure (pronounced sude) which is a live fat worm.  I have a video of it, just don’t know how I can send it..... I’m working on that though!  We also had armadillo soup and are going to eat a turtle soon hahah.  That’s pretty much all I got. My spanish is getting to be pretty good so I’m pretty excited about that because I have only been gone 3 months.  One scripture found this week that was cool is in romans 5:3-5 and shows how we should face our trials! i love you guys so much, and will find out about the skype this week! do you guys have a skype account?  I think i will get a pre call as well to inform you guys more on the 25! i love you guys so much and hope all is going well!

                                                                      sure (pronounced "sude")

this is living with us for a little while
I told Jake I love turtles--do you have to eat it?
He said, I'm not sure, it's up to the bishop--it's his?!

Judging between good and bad...and donuts

December 9, 2013

hey mom!  this week has been pretty good.  we had a lot of our appointments fall through, but we are just trying to do our part because everyone has their agency.  everything is going well out here though.  we got three packages this week and they were awesome!!!! i feel so blessed to have a family that supports me so well. also i am very grateful for the members of are ward because they are a great support to me as well.  nothing really crazy happened this week.  i did get to carry cement up a huge hill this week which was a good time...... hahah I did want to share some scriptures, one is in moroni 7 verses 16-17, i really like this scripture because it shows how we need to judge between the good and the bad.  This is really imortant for us because we need fill our lives with good things and not waste our time on this earth!  the other one is in first nephi chapter 15 verse 24.  I like this one a lot because if  we study the scriptures and learn the words of christ, we can be strengthened.  They really are a gift in our lives and we need to take advantage of them!  I would also like to ask for the scripture mastery cards that they give out every year in seminary..... there are four of them, old new test, bom, and doctrine and covenants! also if you could send donuts that would be sweet!  I dont know if its possible, but it would be sweet! love you guys so much!

these are the pictures for the week, elder sepuleveda who went home last week! my first zone leader to finish his mission!

Painting Houses @ Christmastime!

Jake's email from December 2, 2013

Mom!

this week has gone bye very fast!  it was kind of disappointing not having thanksgiving, but the other north american elders and i are going to celebrate it today! they were cooking yesterday so we will see how that turns out!  this week was awesome though!  its pretty crazy that we just finished a transfer because it seems like i just got here!  this past week elder quille and i promised that we would try to go through the week with exact obedience, and it really paid off!  we found this family that had been attending church for around 8 months, but wasn't baptized because they weren't married (nobody is in peru) and we are going in for round two hahaha.  we also have another family that is progressing pretty well and I just felt really blessed this week!  I know that obedience is really one of the most important things in this life.  even if something seems small and unimportant, it is there for a reason and we will always receive blessings when we keep the commandments.  I have some pictures that i am going to send of this week, because elder quille and I were practicing our painting skills this week because everyone paints there house around Christmas  hahah. other than that all is well here. I got one card this week which was awesome! please keep those coming.  also if its possible, could you send us some sunblock, sunflower seeds, brownie mix, more peanut butter, twizzlers and a Christmas decoration for hna soledad (our pencionista)?  if you could that would be awesome, if not don't worry about it!  I wanted to send this email first to make sure I had enough time!

love
elder zundel

lthe first picture is vicente's brother hector or alberto.... he goes by both.  that's my alianza jersey and he is wearing it in saul cantoral which is pretty much crazy.  there are two gangs here, la u and alianza... they are both soccer teams and their fans are crazy.  hector used to really be in deep, but he got baptized and served a mission in guatemala and is so awesome!

Trials are there to help us learn....

November 25, 2013

ok mom here is my long email for the week.  this week has been pretty normal, but we had a lot of meetings.  one with the mission president and a couple zones was awesome.  he talked about how we need to obey every rule even the little ones. luke 16:1-11 is a really good example of this!  we also got to have a conference with the whole mission with elder russell m nelson! it was amazing!!!!!!!!!  seriously so awesome.  he is so crazy!  he was talking to us about how missionary work is hard, but we just need to push through and do our best!  it was really awesome and the spirit was definitely with us!  we also started teaching this other family, the Valverde family, and they ARE awesome!  its rare when we get investigators that really understand what we are teaching.  I recited the 1st vision and they were kind of skeptical, but we are returning this week to teach them about the Book of Mormon!  its going to be sweet!  we also had a broadcast conference yesterday that talked about the importance of working with members!  Its really important to help out the missionaries in any way possible!  this is the lords work and we need to help it move a long as best as it can!  we were blessed to grow up in the gospel and should share our great knowledge with all the people we know!  those were just a few of my thoughts I had and I will end it with a scripture in doctrine and covenants section 121:7-8 this scripture is awesome and can help us get through our trials! also remember our trials are there to help us learn! Love you guys so much and miss you, but I will see you in a month por medio de skype!

love, elder zundel

First Baptism!

November 18, 2013

Hello family!

This week has been good!  It went by really fast and I feel like there really isn't enough time to do everything in the week! Vicente was baptized on Saturday by the one and only Elder Zundel!  I will be sending pictures shortly so you can enjoy them!  Not much out of the ordinary happened this week, I know I am a little bit early today, but we are going to play soccer two hours away which I'm not too excited about hahah.  hopefully I will get to see some of my friends from the ccm though!  I sent you guys a letter this week so I'm not sure when it will get there.... I got juju and bernies package which was awesome! elder quille and I enjoyed the candies!  I also gave a talk in sacrament meeting yesterday which was interesting, but it was good.  I even got compliments on my spanish and one guy thought i was getting ready to go home because how good my spanish was!  it was awesome to hear that the people think my spanish is understanable!  one thing I do need is to know if any of the older facer boys served missions in argetina!!! rosario to be specific!  there is an elder moreya here who was baptized bye an elder facer from california and i wanted to know who it was... it could be a cousin or someone but i thought it was cool!  im not sure about the camera yet, i think i can go and buy one when we have a free pday, but im not to worried about it right now! i have some good pictures so i will send them after this!  i hope all is going well for you guys because i am doing great!

El Cerro---The Hill

November 11, 2013

this week has gone bye fast for me too!  I'm glad to see dad is still working hard out there hahah. I hope you guys are enjoying yourself!  this week hasn't really been much more than normal, but it was a good one. my spanish is coming along. i can understand most of it, but my vocabulary is very limited hahah.  one bad thing that happened this week was my camera lens broke....... not really sure what Happened, but we are going to get it checked out today so don't worry! I also took some sweet photos with elder quilles camera, I will send those shortly!  we don't have any new dates, but Vicente is looking good! he came to church with us yesterday and his brother spoke!  his brother is freaking sweet!  his name is hector and i think he is the only member in the family not really sure, but he got baptized and then served a mission.  he comes with us like every night to teach and hes really funny.  he really wants some twizzlers so if you can send those that would be sweet! also elder quille really wants to try swedish fish hahah.  also whatever else you want to send would be sweet!  we had a lesson with a less active member this week that was crazy! She is really having a hard time right now and it was awesome to be able to help her!  I think that's one of the main purposes here is just to help others in anyway possible!  I also think that its important to remember this after the mission too! I am going to send some sweet pictures and theses are for Juju and Bernie..... i finally made it to the "hill" hahaha

talk to you next week! love you!

my whole area is cerros and it does get a little tiring.

mom:     what is a cerro?  a big hill?  you are probably in great shape!

jake:       yes ma'am, cerros are hills and I would be, but we have to each
so much food out here its rough!  i am not sure when, but I think I will be
              eating guinea pig soon hahaha

mom:     why do you have to eat so much food?

jake:       because the members give us so much and you cant turn it down haha

CASABLANCA, PERU

November 4, 2013

this week definitely flew by!  it was a lot better than the first one haha.  the Spanish is coming along, but I am still definitely a gringo.  I can understand a lot better though which is good.  I got both packages and cards too!  I don't think the other address is wrong, i just think it is easier to send it to the other one for the mission president and everything else.  elder quille and I love everything you sent us and would love more haha.  we had a pretty solid week this week.  we have one investigator committed to baptism, Vicente Mendiz and he's awesome.  he is 18 just like me and i really hope all goes well!  Thats so awesome about missy, she said she wanted my address here, so if you could send here that that would be sweet because i dont even know it hahah.  i am going to email her after this!  I have some good pictures to send to you this week!  only two though haha.  i also got to go on splits with a north American missionary, elder walker and he is from arizona!  he used to be in the ward that meets next to the temple.  it was awesome! we were walking down this street and this lady came up to us and was talking to us about the rapture and other strange things hahah.  he decided he wanted to try and give her a book of mormon so we started to walk with her, but it soon became apparent that she wasn't listening so once we got to the door of her church she left us for a minute and we booked it hahah.  i thought it was a pretty funny story.  other than that not much is happening, just enjoying Peru more and more! one more thing, if you are going to send money, could you send it in Soles?  i just don't know how to exchange it here sorry!

con mucho amor
elder zundel

mom!

whats happening!  this week has been a long one hahah.  big boy peru is a lot different than the ccm.  the language is pretty rough out here too.  its also difficulct to remember everyone that we are teaching and rhe ward members, but even with all the problems, i am having a good time!  its like a whole new world out here hahah.  the people are so awesome out here!  i just wish i could understand everything that they are saying hahah.  they are extremely generous with all their food and drinks which have been interesting.  speaking of food, i heardabout them in the ccm, but i thought they were a lie haha.  we have a pencionista that makes us breakfast and dinner!  we then eat with a ward member for lunch.  we also have a lady that does our laundry for us hahah.  the church hires them because this area is really poor and tthey need jobs!  my first are is wiesse, and my first area is casablanca.  its freaking sweet!  you could maybe try to google he areto see pictures or something! it has a whole bunch of hills and the people just have houses on them randomly hahah.  we have a sweet house too i will send some pictures after im done writing.  we live right under neath the bishop of thew ward who is aweome! and last but not least, my companion elder quille.  he is the freaking man!!!!  he is from peru so he doesnt speak english, but he is such a good teacherand example for me.  i still cant really comprehend what i am doing haha its so awsome!  there definitely are hard timews out here, but one thing that i have learned is to just be as patient as possible because if im having a rough lesson or day, it will pass soon and its better to just keep working at it and it will eventually get better!  there are also dogs everywhere here hahah.  i have ofte thought about the dazer, but i am getting along just fine wthout it! i havent gotten any pakages or letters yet, except i did get one from stephen colten crue and ethan which was awesome!  i want to try and wite them, but they will have to be patient with me hahaha.  i have pday on mondays now and we write at like 10 in peruvian time!  tell alli i will try to write here a birthday card, but i dont really know how to send letters yet hahah i hope she had a good day!

love elder zundel

buenos tardes!

hello mother!
how are you doing at the home front?  everything is going great here!  i got five letters last night hahah two from you one from alli and one from ashley and one from bernie and juju!  did alli and ashley ever get there letters?!  i sent them awhile ago, but im not sure how mail really works here hahah.  everyone in my district makes jokes about me because im pretty much the only one who gets letters hahah.  anyways,  this week was awesome!  it flew by and its crazy to think about, but i will be in big boy Peru in 4 days!!!!! its crazy and im not sure where the time went here.  i dont really feel ready to leave here, but am definitely ready hahah.  i love it here, but we pretty much do the same thing every day which gets a little boring.  im still waiting on the other letters to get here, but i did get your international stamps.  i didnt know how to send letters when in the feild so i thought those would work, but i now understand how to haha.  i cant really remember what we did this week because it seems like yesterday that i was emailing you guys.  we asked our fake investigator if he wanted to get baptized, unfortunately he isnt quite ready haha.  our teachers have been telling us what it will be like when we get into the feild and they said we will have around 15 investigators at a time which is insane because we have two here and its hard to teach them!  i will have some sort of contact with you guys on tuesday, i think an email.  the only downside is i dont know when our pday is so dont freak out if it is a little while before you here from me!   I hope everyone is doing well out there, dont worry about me, im living the good life out here in peru!!!! i really feel so lucky for this oppurtnity i cant beleive i get to do this somethimes!!!! love you guys so much!

He loves to get written letters/and packages in the mail---thank you all so much for your support!!  love you!!!  jen

well its thursday again!  not much different goes on here, but its really fun!  we are getting really close to going to the field, which is crazy! its already been almost a motnh.  i got some sweet ties for dad grandpa and bernie i think they will like them and i will just carry them around until i come home!  it will be worth the wait!  that guy that added you is a teacher here, and he is really funny hahah.  he isnt our teacher, but hes really funny.  i am learning a lot of spanish here, but it still pretty hard.  once we get into the field, i think it will be better because nobody will speak english and i will be forced to speak spanish haha.  anyways i have also started to learn loor al profeta (praise to the man) on the piano!  its pretty sweet and very fun.  im not sure if i have already talked about this, but here at the ccm, one of the thinggs they have us do is teach lessons in spanish with a fake investigator.  its pretty crazy, but i get by with my broken spanish and just share a lot of scriptures haha.  i sent alli and ashley letters, they should have left on monday so hopefully they get them soon.  also mom if you could send me a battery powered set of hair clippers that would be awesome! i really want to learn to curt my own hair haha.  i also took a really cool video for you guys, but i dont think i am allowed to send it so you might havew to wait until i get back.  its one of the coolest things though!  every monday night before the advanced grouop leaves we all go to the third floor next to the door that separates the elders from the hermanas and sing god be with you till we meet again.  three verses in spaniosh and 1 in english.  its one of thje coolest thingsd if donwe!  dont worry either mom i havce been eating plenty of food hahah.  theres a rumor going around, that we will get pentinistas (not sure how its spelled)  in the field.  they are someone in the ward that comes and cooks of food and cleans our clothes because the people need jobs so badly here!  evertypne says its true, but i still struggle with it hahah.  anyways, time is going by really fast here and its a lot of fun.  i dont need anything really except maybe some twistables to mark my scriptures haha.  also i love all the letters i get, they are so awesome and inspiring!  im excited for alli and luke, they will have an awesome time!  hope theese are enoughg words hahah i try really hard during this hour to remember everything we have done haha but its hard!  i forgot to tell you mother, but i got you a nice pair of llama earrings hahah they are sweet! i will be sending some pictures soon, thanks for all the emails and letters they mean so much!!!!

Jake's email from Oct. 3---
mom!

how are you guys doing?!  i had another great week in the ccm, all the days seem to blend together here, but they are going by very fast which is kind of scary! this past sunday i became a district leader (107)! its pretty cool, but adds a lot more stress sometimes!  we are all getting along great and are working hard!  i got a letter from ashley and the pictures!  thanks so much!  i got to show my roommates and have found alli an ecuadorian boyfriend hahah i have a picture of him that is hilarious and i think colten will like it as well!  i also got my haircut by one of my roomates! it was awesome and i look great as usual!  i took a picture of it so hopefully i will have time to send it!  it reminded me of the good ole days when tommy would cut my hair at lunch!  dont worry tommy you wont be replaced (hopefully he sees this).  not too much else has happened here just a lot of studying and classes! there was an earthquake last weeek that i forgot to tell you about, but it was very small! i feel really cool when we get to go out in the city because i lead everyone around and its just really  fun haha.  the busses are still crazy here though! i cant even stand up straight in them and they just cram as many people in as possible haha.  i dont have much else to say except i came across an awesome scripture this week!  its in 3 nephi 13:26-34.  sorry if its not the righ5t reference, i forgot to bring it with me.  it is the one about the lillies of the field.  i just thought it was awesome that we dont really have to worry about anything as long as we are striving to keep the comandments and live like jesus.  anyways, i hope you guys have another awesome week! you will be in my prayers!

love elder zundel

these are for tommy! my haircut from my panamanian brother

this is a possible boyfriend for you alli! hes from ecuador (if i remember correctly).  i got the pictures last night and he was asking if you had a boyfriend and to tell you he is interested hahaha.  this is also a picture i wanted to show colten because he has never gotten a haircut in his life and i was wondering how coltens lucious locks were coming along.  he doesnt have to cut it because its a tradition, i think its pretty awesome!

PICTURES!!!

We received a shorter email from Jake on September 26, 2013.  He seemed in a hurry trying to figure out how to upload and send pictures for the first time!  Thank you to so many who have emailed him!!  I know he really appreciated it and is going to try to get back to you all when he gets the time!----jen

hello mother!

this was another great week in the ccm.  i got a few of your letters (one from dad and one from you)! they were awesome and i love them!  also tell everyone thank you for emailing me but i probably wont be able to back to them right away.

not too much different happened this week, except we did get to go prostlyting and it was crazy! we taught two lessons in members homes and i wasnt able to speak much but i could kind of understand them!  we even got to go to an area that is in lima north! the people dont have much, but i can tell they are awesome people!  we also had to say goodbye to our other roomates this week because the latinos only stay for two weeks! it was sad saying goodbye to them because they were so awesome.  i will try to send some pictures if i have time i just have to try to figure out how to first hahah.  tell everyone thanks a ton for sending me emails its so awesome!  a tip we got from older missionaries here is to take pictures and read them later so i again appologize if i dont respond to some of the other people!

also if you could send me some more memory cards.  dont hate me mom, but i gave two of them away hahah.  its actually a good story and i will share it with you because not much has happened this week.  it was there last night and elder pujay (from lima) gave me his haz lo justo pin (choose the right) it is so awesome and is on my new shoulder bag with a picture of the temple on it haha.  anyways a didnt know what to give him in return, but remembered that he didnt have as camera.  i really felt bad about this and decided i would give him it so he could take some pictures! another one of our roomates was trying to buy one of another elder and i decided i would give him one because we had become good friends and he too didnt have a camera.  he gave a new tie as a gift and it was just really cool.  other big news, i got a haircut today hahah.  i am healthy and all is going well!

Elder Zundel (Jake's) second email--September 19, 2013..sorry no pictures yet :(

buenas tardes!

hello mother! (and who ever else reads this)  this week has been so crazy geeting used to the schedule here.  i want to describe this place to you, but it seems impossible hahah.  i sent a letter to you guys, not sure when it will reach you, but i hope it gets to you soon.  to answer your questions mom, yes i have made new friends haha, the weather reminds me of california where it looks like it is going to rain, but never does.  as for anything i need, i dont really need it but i would like some pictures of our family, my friends maybe some of me playing football and basketball or of my surfboard and skateboard! not sure how if that is possible, i would just like to show the others elders!  to be honest the shoes are actually growing on me and i think they are semi stylish haha! i havent gotten any letters, but word on the street is mail takes forever to get here!  i think what i am going to do as far as emails is send one great big one like this and afterwords send more personalized ones to people who write me!

i will now try to describe what it is like here.  its pretty much the craziest thing ever.  i dont think anything will top this experience in my life.  elder bradley and i have a dorm room that we share with 4 latin american elders that dont speak any english hahah.  we all have so much fun together even though we cant fully communicate.  my spanish is improving quickly here, im still definitely a gringo, but i can communicate with most of the latino elders.  they are so much fun and really brighten our days and i have become friends with a lot of them.  if i have time to send pictures of all of us i will!  elder jarman and elder ruiz are companions which is kind of lame, but probably good because i need to focus and learn a lot here haha.  we are in different districts too, because we are going to different missions, but we hang out a bunch!  the other elders are interesting but we all get along great! there are two from canada! if you could let me know where elden lives that would be much appreciated.  i was feeling pretty homesick the first couple days, but im fine now.  hermano tello (one of our teachers) told us that we need to think of our families and friends and things we miss and let them motivate us to work harder and i think that is awesome advice for us elders!  another crazy thing here is the classes, the teachers can barely speak english! i was shocked when we went to our first class, but i am getting more used to it and learning a lot!  we also practice teaching lessons only in spanish which can be extremely frustrating.  it teaches us a lot thoufgh.  elder bradley cant speak much spanish so it is usually up to me to talk the whole time hahah.  i think god is trying to show me what it will be like when i have a latino companion and i cANT SPEAK MUCH.  we had this fireside thing for everyone in the ccm and there was an oppurtunity to read something in spanish and one of my latino friends said i should stand up and read it, so i did haha.  the speaker was impressed because i couldnt even understand what i was reading, just doing my best to pronounce everything correctly.  he then gave an execelent lesson on faith and how if we dont think we can do something, we cant. but if we believe in ourselves and have faith that the lord will help us we can do anything! i found this inspiring because there are times whern i think there is no way i can learn spanish!  our schedule consists of breakfast lunch and dinner with a lot of tudying and classes in between.  i also have been practicing my soccer skills here because we get an hour of physical activity a day and elder bradely and i play soccer with the latinos! i scored a goal the other day, im kind of a big deal hahah.  i am trying to think of everything we do here but its alot.

i just wanted to close with the story of my day today! craziest day so far! every thursday wer get to go out into the actual city of peru! (we joke that we are still in the united states because we are so protected here hahah) we had breakfast and then made our way to the gates where we got on a bus that they literally just stuff as many people as possible on to haha i couldnt even stand up straight and was struggling to stand up hahah.  the driving here is crazy just like evryone says haha.  we went to the temple and then to some stores and then had to get back.  it was awesome.  thursday is my pday just throwing that out there.i have an hour to email so i am trying to do it really quickly. sorry for the errors.  we are going prostilting on saturday. no clue how to spell that word, but we get to go teach less active members.  the older elders say its a huge culture shock so i am extremely excited haha!!! i dont have much else to say so i hope you enjoy these words! if you could maybe post my email somewhere that would be cool if not no worries i only really need to hear from you guys! (=

love and miss you guys a bunch,

elder zundel

ps keep me updated on whats going on! pretty please

Elder Jake Zundel has arrived in Peru!!! Here is his first email!! --9-12-13

¡Hola!

hey guys we got to email on our first day to let you guys know that we made it safely! (i also think its our p-day but im not sure haha)  anyways i made it safely to peru! its pretty cool here, but we havent seen much. the airport here was crazy, but we made it through with ease! i tried to take a picture for you, but i was soon told by a worker that pictures werent allowed in that area and i had to delete them haha.  we got to the mtc late last night and i felt bad because we had to get into our room where other elders were sleeping.  i dont think we were too loud so thats good.  we were also assigned companions last night and my first companion is Elder Bradely! hes cool and is from utah!  i dont know much else about him, but will get to know him better soon. we got to sleep in a little bit because we got in so late and had a nice breakfast of yogurt and cherrios.  i got my name tags this morning and exchanged some money so i can buy you some gifts haha.  we also saw the temple yesterday and it looks awesome! word on the street is that we go about once a week.  everyone is really nice here, but its kind of hard to communicte with most of the people haha. i try my best and its actually really fun and i cant wait until i can speak it with ease.  not much else has happened here though, im just happy that i am finally out here!  it was really nice to fly with damen and viliami because we all stuck together and figured everything out.  well i have to go eat lunch now and i hope this is enough words for you mom haha.  love and miss you guys, but this is were i am supposed to be!

love,
elder Zundel
